Plant City is an incorporated city with its own tree ordinance, separate from Hillsborough County’s. Inside the city limits the city’s rules apply. Outside, in places like Dover, Turkey Creek, and the farms toward Lithia, the county’s rules apply. A permit is required for most yard trees 12 inches or wider, and grand oaks are strictly protected. Storm season in Plant City
Plant City is far enough inland to miss the surge and close enough to the coast to get the wind. The 2024 storms dropped lone pines across the farms and laurel oaks across the older neighborhoods. On acreage, a spring walk to check the pines near the house and the barn is worth the time. In town, thinning the oak canopies before June is the best prevention there is.
