Brandon sits on sandy, well-drained ground east of Tampa, which is easy on stump grinders and hard on shallow-rooted trees in a drought. The big local story is tree age. Brandon grew fast between 1970 and 1990, and the fast-growing laurel oaks and water oaks that were planted then are aging out together. That’s why every summer brings a fresh round of split trunks and dropped limbs along SR 60 and Bloomingdale Avenue. Live oaks planted in the same years are just hitting their stride and mostly need thinning, not removal.
Brandon is unincorporated Hillsborough County, so the county’s tree ordinance applies. Most yard trees 12 inches or wider at chest height need a removal permit. Grand oaks of 34 inches or more are protected more strictly. Invasive species like Brazilian pepper are exempt. Storm season in Brandon
