Original Carrollwood went in around Lake Carroll in 1959, Carrollwood Village followed in the 70s, and both were planted wall to wall with oaks. Sixty years later the live oaks are magnificent and the laurel oaks are dying. Every summer another one splits along Orange Grove Drive or drops a limb on a car in Carrollwood Village. Local conditions in Carrollwood
The ground here is sandy and drains well. The exception is around Lake Carroll, Lake Magdalene, and the smaller lakes, where the water table sits high and oak roots rot. The bigger issue is age. Fast-growing laurel oaks and water oaks live 50 to 70 years, and Carrollwood planted thousands of them 50 to 65 years ago. The live oaks planted alongside them are in their prime and mostly need thinning and deadwooding to stay safe.
Carrollwood is unincorporated Hillsborough County. Most yard trees 12 inches or wider at chest height need a county removal permit, and grand oaks of 34 inches or more are strictly protected. Florida’s arborist exemption lets a single-family homeowner remove a documented hazard tree without a permit, and a rotting laurel oak over the bedroom usually qualifies. We handle either path.

Storm season in Carrollwood
Carrollwood’s canopy is beautiful and heavy, and heavy canopies catch wind. In the 2024 storms, the trees on roofs in Carrollwood Village were almost all laurel oaks that had never been thinned.
